Twenty years from now, people might forget the candle and the flowers, but they’ll remember the trip.
They remember the restaurant in Lyon where the waiter brought another bottle of wine without being asked, and suddenly two hours were gone. They remember seeing their mother tear up in front of Monet’s Water Lily Pond, a painting she’d wanted to see since childhood. They remember a morning in Napa with nothing planned and nowhere to go, just enjoying being there.
Mother’s Day comes in May, when Europe is in full bloom and your schedule might be more open. Instead of planning a safe trip, plan one your family will talk about for years. Here are three ideas to get you started.

Some kinds of tiredness don’t disappear with sleep. Sometimes, you need three days with no plans and someone else taking care of everything.
Napa Valley is ideal for this kind of escape. The whole area encourages you to slow down. Start your day with yoga overlooking the vineyards. Treat yourself to a massage you might never book at home. Enjoy wine tasting at a small family-run winery. Have dinner where the chef grows many of the ingredients right outside. Places like Auberge du Soleil and Meadowood offer more than spa treatments; they make every moment feel special and well-deserved (and my insider connections can get you the VIP treatment she deserves).
If you want to go abroad, consider the spa towns near Vienna, Austria. People have enjoyed these thermal springs since Roman times. Take a warm soak, sip coffee slowly, and stroll along the promenade in the evening. It’s simple, but it works. Add a night at the Vienna opera or a day in the Wachau wine valley, and you have a trip that covers everything.
One rule: don’t schedule every hour. Leaving time open is what makes the trip special.

The best food cities aren’t always known for fancy restaurants. They’re the places where food and culture are so closely linked that every meal has a story.
In the U.S., New Orleans stands out. The food here has deep roots. Begin with a beignet at Café Du Monde. Try a cooking class and learn how to make a real roux. Finish your day at Galatoire’s, where some waiters have worked for decades. New Orleans leaves a lasting impression in the best way.
If you want to travel abroad, Lyon, France, is a top choice. It’s called the food capital of the world for a reason. Instead of fancy restaurants, try the bouchons—small, traditional bistros serving classic dishes. Spend a morning at Les Halles de Lyon market, where the cheese and charcuterie are worth the visit on their own.
Keep one morning free. Wander through the market, sample everything, and debate what to bring home. Those are the moments you’ll remember.

The best moments on these trips aren’t at the famous sights. They happen over dinner, on the walk back to your hotel, or years later when someone says, “Remember when?” and you both smile.
Paris is famous for a reason, but try to avoid the usual tourist spots. Explore the glass-roofed passages in the 2nd arrondissement. Spend a peaceful hour at the Musée Rodin, where sculptures are displayed outside in a quiet garden. Visit the Raspail market on Saturday morning, then find a small bistro with the lunch special on a chalkboard. Paris is at its best when you take your time and wander.
If you want to stay closer to home, Charleston, South Carolina, is a pleasant surprise. The historic buildings are beautiful. The restaurant scene is impressive, with places like Husk and FIG worth the trip alone. Gullah Geechee food traditions share a powerful story in American culinary history. Spend an afternoon at Middleton Place, one of the oldest gardens in the country, and you’ll have a weekend that feels both beautiful and relaxed.
Plan a few highlights, but keep your afternoons open. The best moments will happen naturally.

The best time to take this trip isn’t when the kids are older, work is less busy, or life is simpler. That moment almost never arrives. The right time is now, while everyone is healthy and able to go.
The memories you make on a trip like this last. The inside jokes, the meal that lasted for hours, the afternoon you stumbled onto something unexpected—these are the stories you’ll share again and again.
