I’ll be honest: India wasn’t on my bucket list. For years, I had filed it under someday, maybe. Too remote. Too vast. Too chaotic. Too far outside my comfort zone. I was convinced I wouldn’t find anything to eat. I’m not a fan of Indian food. Curry isn’t my thing. I genuinely pictured myself picking at bread for two weeks.
But here’s what I discovered: Indian cuisine is hundreds of things—fresh, regional, aromatic, and entirely unexpected. From street snacks in Old Delhi to elegant hotel dining, the food was layered and extraordinary. I ate well every day and came home six pounds lighter. If that doesn’t pique your curiosity about India, I don’t know what will. India has a way of proving one wrong about everything.

From the instant I arrived at The Imperial — a grand heritage hotel where white-gloved service and Mughal-era elegance intersect in the most unexpected way — India began dismantling my assumptions one by one. My first real taste of the country came from a rickshaw. It meandered through the narrow, exhaust-warmed lanes of Old Delhi, past spice merchants, marigold garlands, colorful bazaars, and sacred temples. I discovered that beauty and chaos can coexist: the call to prayer cut through the racket — horns, vendors, crowds — and gave meaning to it all. I realized I never wanted the ride to end.
The next morning, I stood inside Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, watching Seva—selfless community service that feeds over 10,000 people daily. No questions asked or payment expected—just open-hearted generosity on a huge scale. Witnessing this changed my perspective on humanity, revealing the power of selfless giving. That moment rearranged something in me that hasn’t shifted back.

At 5:15 in the blue-gray dark before sunrise, I walked through the east gate of the Taj Mahal. I had prepared myself to be awestruck, but was not prepared for how deeply it would move me. Watching the marble catch the first light and change color left me speechless. No photograph adequately shows it, and I say that as someone who has seen many iconic sights.
We stayed at The Oberoi Amarvilas, with every room overlooking the Taj Mahal. Sunrises and sunsets over that landmark from your own terrace, teacup in hand—if you’re visiting Agra, there’s no better address.

Jaipur delivered more than I could fit into one day: Amber Fort’s Rajput architecture, an afternoon learning block-printing from master craftsmen, a cooking class, the City Palace, and a tuk-tuk ride to Hawa Mahal. At The Oberoi Rajvilas, we retreated to garden surroundings with rooms so beautiful you almost forgot the city outside.
I didn’t fully appreciate, upon arrival, that Jaipur is the gem capital of the world. The city processes more colored gemstones than nearly anywhere else, and its jewelry tradition stretches back centuries. Because the stones are cut, set, and sold locally, the prices are a fraction of what you’d pay at home. The workmanship and volume are unmatched (if only my luggage and wallet space were more generous)!

Udaipur is the kind of city that makes you want to cancel your flight home. Situated in the Aravalli Hills, the city is surrounded by glistening lakes, elegant palaces, and quiet temples. It is one of India’s most romantic destinations, and it earns that reputation effortlessly.

The Taj Lake Palace floats in Lake Pichola like a white marble mirage. It’s accessible only by boat. Step off the dock and into another century—arched corridors, lotus-carved columns, candlelit dinners reflected in still water. Hills glow at dusk. Udaipur is truly India’s City of Sunrise.

Mumbai is India’s financial capital and the home of Bollywood—and yes, we took the dance class! But what stayed with me above all was the city’s remarkable human machinery. We visited Mani Bhavan, Gandhi’s simple residence, a study in what matters most.

We watched the dabbawalas—a century-old network delivering 200,000 lunches daily across Mumbai by bicycle, train, and foot. Their precision is so remarkable that even Harvard has marveled at it. No app. No GPS. Near-zero error rate. At Dhobi Ghat, the world’s largest open-air laundry, hundreds of families have washed the city’s clothes by hand for over 140 years. The scale and choreography are staggering. Mumbai runs on genius.

Here is where I want to speak directly to every client who has done Africa and is wondering what comes next.
The answer is India.
Ranthambore National Park is Bengal tiger country. It is also home to leopards, sloth bears, striped hyenas, and more bird species than most people will ever see. The landscape looks nothing like the Serengeti or the Okavango. Ancient crumbling forts rise from the treeline. Peacocks strut through the brush. Langur monkeys watch from stone walls. But when a tiger steps into a clearing and turns to look directly at you, it reaches into your chest and grabs hold. Same feeling. Different world entirely.

India is not an alternative to Africa. It is equally worthy of your serious travel attention—a different continent, wildlife, and civilization, yet delivering the same indelible experience.
The world is bigger than I thought. India made sure I knew it.
