I hear this a lot: “We’re excited, but we’re going to wait a few months and see how things look.”
I get it. The world feels uncertain. Prices seem unpredictable. Waiting feels like the cautious move. Hint: It’s usually not.
Let’s talk about why.
You’re not avoiding risk — you’re swapping one kind for another. The difference is that this one is quieter and far more predictable.
Prices on premium airfare, great hotels, and talented guides don’t hold still. They creep up as demand builds. And the best inventory? It disappears before you know it. And this year, it is happening much more quickly than I’ve seen in the past.
I watched this play out recently with a couple planning two weeks in Italy — a beautifully layered itinerary with countryside properties, a private driver through Tuscany, and a few dining reservations that take months to secure. They wanted six more weeks to think about it. Totally reasonable. When they came back ready to commit, the trip was still possible — just not that trip. Their first-choice hotel in the Val d’Orcia was fully booked for their dates. A villa in Positano had nearly doubled its rate. The private guide I’d been holding a conversation with? Already spoken for through September.
We made it work. But it wasn’t the same itinerary, and they knew it…and they felt it.
Luxury travel isn’t built on unlimited inventory. The best experiences are, by definition, limited.
There are only so many suites at a property worth staying in. The right small ship — intimate scale, exceptional itinerary, crew that actually knows the region — fills up fast. World cruises sell out first, sometimes 18-24 months before departure. The Oberoi properties in India that everyone wants for the winter light? Gone by August.
By the time most travelers feel “ready” to commit, usually early spring for a summer trip, the top options are already gone. What’s left is often fine. It’s just not what we would have chosen.
That’s the trade-off no one talks about.
The same holds true for safaris. The camps with the best locations — Singita Grumeti in Tanzania, Mombo in Botswana’s Okavango Delta — and the most experienced trackers are often spoken for a year in advance. Waiting doesn’t just shift your travel dates. It shifts your entire experience.

This is where the real impact shows up.
When you wait, you’re no longer choosing from the best options. You’re choosing from what’s left.
That might mean settling for a hotel that’s perfectly adequate instead of one that genuinely surprises you. It might mean accepting a connecting flight through an airport you hate because the direct route is sold out or paying a premium for the privilege. It might mean losing access to a private game drive, a chef’s table, a local expert who would have made the whole trip feel different.
And perhaps most frustrating of all—you end up paying more for a trip that delivers less.
I’ve also seen the opposite, and it’s a very different story.
Clients who commit early — who understand how the system works — are the ones calling me six months later to say the trip was everything they hoped for. They have the room with the view. They have the guide everyone else is asking about. They have the dinner reservation that their friends couldn’t get. Their trip didn’t just come together more smoothly. It felt deliberate from the very first day.

It’s a fair concern, and I take it seriously. The world isn’t static, and travel never has been — especially right now.
But waiting for perfect clarity is a game you won’t win. There will always be something: a headline, a policy shift, an election, a reason to pause. I’ve been doing this long enough to know that the “right moment” to book rarely arrives on its own.
The smarter approach isn’t to delay. It’s to plan in a way that accounts for change.
That means working with advisors and suppliers who offer clear, reasonable cancellation policies — and actually understanding them before you sign anything. It means investing in travel insurance that covers what matters to you, not just the basics, and reading the fine print while you’re still healthy and optimistic rather than after something goes wrong. And it means building an itinerary with enough flexibility that if one piece shifts, the whole trip doesn’t unravel.
In other words, you don’t eliminate uncertainty. You manage it.
If you’re thinking about a meaningful trip—one that involves time, money, and expectations—you have two options.
You’ve already done the hard part — you know where you want to go. Don’t let hesitation quietly trade away the best version of that trip for a lesser one. Book it, protect it well, and trust that a plan made with intention will take you much further than one assembled from whatever’s left.
If you’ve been sitting on a trip idea, let’s talk. A quick conversation is usually all it takes to figure out what’s worth securing now — and what can wait. Reach out, and let’s map it out together.
