I recently attended the ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam for the third time in four years, and one thing is clear: river cruising continues to evolve. New brands are entering the market, established lines are refining their offerings, and travelers are becoming more selective.
With that in mind, I revisited and updated a blog I originally wrote on March 24, 2024, adding several new observations and one noteworthy addition.
River cruises combine comfort, culture, and convenience in a way that’s hard to beat. You unpack once, travel through the center of each destination, and step straight into historic towns and cities. But not all river cruise lines are the same. Each appeals to a different type of traveler—much like hotel brands do.
To help simplify the differences, I often compare river cruise lines to familiar hotel brands.
(These comparisons reflect my own experiences, conversations with fellow advisors, and insights from cruise line executives.)

Amadeus is a family-run Austrian company with more than 40 years on Europe’s rivers. Like Marriott, the experience is polished and dependable without pushing into the highest luxury tier.
Ships feature contemporary European design, attentive service, and cuisine centered on regional dishes. The onboard atmosphere is relaxed and international.
One key difference from many competitors is flexibility. Excursions are often optional rather than bundled into the fare, appealing to travelers who want an upscale experience while tailoring activities to their interests.

AmaWaterways sits comfortably in the luxury-but-lively category. Since launching in 2002, the line has grown to nearly 30 ships sailing in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. I’ve been on three Ama Waterways cruises, the latest one for Christmas Markets on the Rhine in 2024, and I can vouch for the quality of the experience.
Like Fairmont hotels, Ama blends refined surroundings with a welcoming atmosphere and strong culinary focus. It’s also a favorite with active travelers thanks to multiple daily excursion options, including biking and hiking.
Dining is a standout. Ama was the first river cruise line inducted into the gourmet society La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, and many ships feature specialty venues like the Chef’s Table Experience.

Avalon focuses on comfort, space, and flexibility. Like Westin hotels, the experience is contemporary and relaxed rather than formal.
Avalon’s defining feature is the Suite Ship design, where staterooms face the river with wall-to-wall panoramic windows that slide open to create an open-air balcony. Instead of a small outdoor space, the entire room becomes the view.
Avalon also emphasizes choice. Guests can select from multiple excursion styles—classic sightseeing, hiking, or biking—so each day can be tailored to personal interests.

Celebrity Cruises plans to launch Celebrity River in 2027, bringing the design-forward style of its ocean ships to the river market. I’m really excited about this new entry into river cruising! Apparently, I’m not the only one – their 2027 itineraries sold out in six minutes!
Early plans call for ships sailing the Rhine and Danube, with a long-term goal of expanding to about 20 vessels.
If successful, Celebrity could introduce a more lifestyle-driven approach to river cruising—offering contemporary design, strong dining options, and a more social onboard atmosphere, similar to the energy found in JW Marriott hotels (in a boutique hotel kind of way).

Emerald sits in the mid-premium tier but leans toward a younger, more contemporary feel.
Ships feature sleek interiors, open atriums, and innovative spaces such as pools that convert into cinemas at night. The overall vibe feels more energetic than many traditional river cruise brands.
Emerald also delivers strong value. Many amenities and excursions are included while pricing generally stays below luxury brands like Tauck or Uniworld.

Riverside entered the market after acquiring several former Crystal River ships and relaunching them with a luxury focus.
The atmosphere feels polished but relaxed—very much like a Four Seasons hotel. Service is attentive and thoughtful without being overly formal. I stayed in the cabin above as my “hotel” when I attended the ASTA River Cruise Expo in 2024, and it was roomy and luxurious!
Because the ships were originally designed for Crystal, they also feel roomier than many river vessels, giving guests more space in both suites and public areas.

Riviera sits comfortably in the premium category—above mass market but below ultra-luxury.
Ships are elegant, itineraries are thoughtfully designed, and service is professional and reliable. Like InterContinental hotels, the focus is on quality and substance rather than flashy extras.
Riviera appeals to travelers (predominantly British audience though they are increasingly appealing to younger baby boomers and North American travelers. with an average age between 55 and 60) who want a refined river cruise experience at a more moderate price point than luxury brands.

Scenic positions itself firmly in the ultra-luxury category, but its design is different from what many travelers expect.
Rather than ornate décor, Scenic ships feature sleek, minimalist interiors with neutral palettes and modern lines. The luxury comes through the experience rather than visual opulence.
Scenic is also ultra-all-inclusive. Excursions, drinks, gratuities, transfers, butler service, and specialty dining are all included, meaning guests rarely need to reach for their wallet.

Tauck is firmly in the luxury category and is known for delivering exceptionally smooth travel experiences. This might be my new favorite river cruise brand after I had the absolute pleasure of sailing on Tauck’s M.S. Grace ship through the Netherlands and Belgium last week and experienced “Tauck-ness” first-hand.
It is said you can leave a Tauck River Cruise richer than you were when you boarded the ship, and they weren’t wrong! They actually give you cash when you are “on your own” for lunch in a city. If your lunch is less than the cash you receive, you keep the money!
Ships intentionally carry fewer guests than they could accommodate, creating a more spacious and personal atmosphere. Nearly everything is included—excursions, gratuities, transfers, drinks, and special cultural experiences.
Tauck also offers exclusive access events such as private palace evenings and after-hours museum visits thanks to its long history in guided travel. We were treated to an after-hours private dinner and tour of the Mauritshaus Museum in The Hague.

Uniworld remains one of the most distinctive brands in river cruising. It’s one of the more comprehensively inclusive river cruise lines with just a few optional upgrades. I had the pleasure of staying in a Deluxe Balcony cabin as my “hotel” room at the Expo, and it was so gorgeous!
Each ship has its own design concept, meaning the onboard visual experience varies more ship-to-ship than on most lines. While older vessels featured ornate décor, newer ships and refurbishments lean toward cleaner palettes, lacquered woods, and refined furnishings.
The result feels similar to Rosewood hotels—luxury properties with strong personality and attentive service.

Viking is the most recognizable name in river cruising.
Its nearly identical Longships offer Scandinavian-inspired design, consistent service, and a predictable onboard experience across Europe’s rivers—one of the key reasons for its popularity, especially among travelers who value consistency. Viking is also adults-only, ensuring a quiet, child-free environment.
The onboard experience emphasizes cultural enrichment through lectures, destination programming, and included excursions. Pricing remains slightly below the luxury tier, though final payment is often required about a year in advance when booking early, unlike its competitors who only require final payment a few months before departure.

VIVA Cruises is a German company bringing a contemporary, lifestyle-oriented approach to river cruising.
Ships feature stylish interiors, multiple dining venues, and an all-inclusive model covering drinks, minibar, Wi-Fi, and gratuities. The onboard atmosphere is relaxed and social rather than formal.
Most guests are currently European—especially German—but about 10% of passengers are North American, a number the company hopes to double in the next few years.
Choosing the right river cruise depends on several factors:
• Your travel style
• Your budget
• Your preferred level of luxury
• How structured you want your days to be
Some travelers want a fully inclusive experience where every detail is handled. Others prefer flexibility so they can explore on their own.
The good news is there is now a river cruise brand for nearly every type of traveler. The key is matching the right cruise line to the right traveler—something that can turn a good trip into a truly memorable one.
