Japan has been named the “best country in the world” by Condé Nast readers in 2023, and my recent trip confirmed why it deserves a top spot on your luxury travel list. Here’s a brief guide to visiting this captivating country.
Spring (March to May): Enjoy cherry blossoms in perfect weather, but book far in advance due to high demand.
Summer (June to August): Although it can be hot and humid, summer is an ideal time to experience lively festivals and world-renowned beach destinations with more budget-friendly options available.
Autumn (September to November): Ideal for stunning fall colors and smaller crowds.
Winter (December to February): Great for winter sports, hot springs, and beautiful illumination displays.
A blend of ancient shrines and modern skyscrapers. Must-sees include Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo Skytree, an interactive art exhibit called TeamLabs Borderless, and Shibuya Crossing, the world’s busiest intersection.
Known for its onsens (hot springs) and views of Mount Fuji, it’s perfect for relaxation with luxury ryokans and serene lake cruises.
If Tokyo is Japan’s pulse, Kyoto is its soul. Enjoy a walk around the Gion District (with the possibility of spotting an actual Geisha), savor kaiseki dinners, and lose yourself among historic temples and gardens wrapped in seasonal beauty. Don’t miss Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Fushimi Inari Shrine’s iconic torii gates, and the magical Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. I highly recommend attending a traditional tea ceremony (where you can dress in a beautiful silk kimono) to appreciate the art of matcha preparation.
In Nara, I encountered wild deer that politely bowed in exchange for a cracker (but be sure to show them your empty hands afterward, as they may nip your pockets if they think you have more food). Moments later, I stood before the Great Buddha at Todai-ji Temple.
As Japan’s culinary capital, Osaka is where food reigns supreme. Don’t miss exploring Dotonbori Street (a lively entertainment district lined with neon lights, an array of street food stalls, and the iconic Glico Man sign), and visit Osaka Castle (one of Japan’s most famous historical landmarks, which I had the perfect view of from my hotel room).
Japan’s northernmost island is a nature lover’s paradise, featuring stunning flower fields in the summer and skiing in the winter, along with relaxing onsens.
Enjoy a blissful finale to your journey on white sandy beaches with a laid-back island vibe reminiscent of Hawaii.
Tokyo: Explore Shinjuku for electronics, Ginza for luxury brands, and Harajuku for unique fashion. Don’t miss vintage shops for designer handbags and local pharmacies for Japanese skincare. Visit Don Quijote for exotic Kit Kat flavors.
Kyoto: Visit Nishiki Market for local delicacies and crafts. I found a precision handcrafted chef’s knife there.
Osaka: Check out Shican’tashi for a mix of high-end and quirky shops.
Remove your shoes before entering homes or traditional accommodations, keep your voice low on public transport, and use chopsticks correctly. Bring socks if you’re wearing sandals, as many places require closed-toe shoes.
• Cash vs. Card: While many places accept credit cards, cash is preferred. Always carry yen for small purchases.
• Stay Hydrated: Summer can be extremely hot—drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen and a hat, and bring an umbrella and a fan to stay cool.
• Bring Hand Wipes: Many restrooms lack drying options; keep hand wipes or sanitizer and hand wipes handy.
• Keep Your Train Ticket: You’ll need it to exit the station. Consider a Japan Rail Pass or a Sui card for convenience.
• Download the Go app: Easily summon a taxi or Uber.
• Create your arrival QR code: Use the Visit Japan website to create your QR code in advance, saving you time and hassle on arrival, especially after a long flight.
