Exploring Greece and Italy Together

Travel is transformative, and for an unforgettable journey, few destinations compare to Greece and Italy. Recently, I had the pleasure of crafting an extraordinary itinerary for a small group of discerning travelers, taking them on a grand adventure through Crete, Santorini, Naxos. Our Greek adventure ended with the historic landmarks of Athens before embarking on a sumptuous Italian experience along the Amalfi Coast. 

Crete: A Mythical Start

Our journey began on the enchanting island of Crete, steeped in history and myth. From the stunning beaches to the ancient ruins of Knossos, Crete’s diverse offerings satisfied every traveler’s curiosity. The island’s rich culinary traditions make it a gastronomic paradise. We dined in atmospheric tavernas, savoring local dishes such as souvlaki, saganaki, and fresh seafood.

Santorini: Postcard Perfection

Next, we moved to the iconic island of Santorini, known for its breathtaking sunsets and cascading white-washed buildings. Picture-perfect scenery greeted us at every turn, and our time here was filled with wine tastings at cliffside vineyards, sun-soaked afternoons by the caldera, and exploring the charming village of Oia. It was a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.

Naxos: The Best of Both Worlds

Our final Greek island stop was Naxos, often dubbed the hidden gem of the Cyclades. With its emerald waters, ancient temples, and quaint villages, Naxos offered a balanced mix of leisure and adventure. We explored Plaka Beach, strolled through the quaint streets of Chalki, enjoyed a cooking class in the mountains, and indulged in local delicacies like Naxian cheese and olive oil.

The Historical Heart: Athens

Our Greek adventure concluded in Athens, a city that seamlessly blends antiquity with modernity. The highlight was undoubtedly our tour of the Acropolis, where the ruins revealed ancient Greece’s fascinating past. Our expert guide brought the Parthenon, the Odeon, and other ancient structures to life.

After a delightful tour and some heartfelt goodbyes to those continuing their journey home, a few members of our group flew to Italy to further enrich our travel experience. 

A Warm Welcome in Amalfi, Italy

In Italy, we started our journey by meeting up with three more couples. Our adventure began on the Amalfi Coast, where we settled into the charming town of Amalfi, a popular seaside resort village with Medieval maritime origins. 

Capri by Boat

A private boat took us on an unforgettable ride to the island of Capri. This luxurious excursion allowed us to bask in the sun, enjoy seaside views of iconic towns like Positano, circumnavigate the island for views of Capri’s famous grottos/sea caves, and explore the charm of Capri and Anacapri with its designer boutiques and delicious pizza!

Positano and Ravello

Back on the Amalfi Coast, our adventures continued in Positano and Ravello. Positano, with its steep, windy streets and pastel-colored houses, offered a stunning visual. We wandered through the narrow pathways, shopped for hand-made jewelry, ceramics, and all things “lemons.” A highlight was a Limoncello tasting in a local distillery where the vibrant owners entertained us with the secrets behind this delightful lemon liqueur. It was an enjoyable blend of authenticity and flavor.

Ravello, perched high above the coastline, charmed us with its cobblestone streets, beautiful views, and incredible food. If not for a freak thunderstorm, we would have missed a little hole in the wall restaurant with an extremely funny waiter who brought us all his favorite things for lunch (and Nonna, the cook, who promised, “I bring you meatballs”). A priceless find!  We also would have explored Villa Rufolo, a private villa dating from the 13^th century which has an iconic view if the weather had cooperated. We settled instead for a view from the bus stop next to the villa, a decent alternative.  Sometimes happy accidents happen, but we will definitely seek out the villa next time!
