For all you movie and TV buffs, a tour of the filming locations of your favorite films and shows is a must-have experience. Imagine visiting the places that brought some of your favorite characters and stories to life! Whether you’re a fan of the Harry Potter films, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Game of Thrones, or even the classic films of Alfred Hitchcock or Francis Ford Coppola, there’s something for everyone. You’ll have the chance to learn about the production process and visit iconic places that have become part of cinematic history. You’ll also get to explore the area around the filming locations and maybe even meet some crew and actors who worked on the films! So, come along on a tour through the filming sites of your favorite movies and TV shows, and let’s make some unforgettable memories!
When planning your trip, you’ll want to ask yourself how much time you want to dedicate to this experience. If you’re visiting one or two filming locations, you can plan a short trip that doesn’t take too much time away from your vacation. People who want to see multiple filming locations or even go on a guided tour must plan accordingly. For example, a tour of the Harry Potter filming locations can last up to 3 days, while the Lord of the Rings locations will take up to 8 days.
It’s also important to remember that each filming location’s weather may differ during each season. Most Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings tours are available during the spring, summer, and fall, while Game of Thrones tours are mostly held during the fall and winter. If you decide to go on a guided tour, you’ll also have the chance to meet the tour guides and ask them any questions you might have about the production process! You’ll want to avoid visiting areas during their rainy season, as you may miss out on the chance to see the locations as they truly are.
As a Harry Potter fan, you’ll want to start your tour in Oxford, England, where the architecture of Hogwarts was inspired (often referred to as the “real Hogwarts”). Oxford’s Christ Church, the Divinity School, and the library served as Hogwarts’ interiors. Oxford University’s courtyard sets the scene in which Harry meets Dumbledore for the first time. You can visit these places during your visit to Oxford, but be sure to book your tickets early as they sell out quickly. Another must-see destination is the Warner Bros. Studios in London, where most of the movies were filmed. A studio tour will take you inside the sets and costumes of your favorite films and allow you to walk in the footsteps of the actors and crew who brought them to life on the screen.
If you’re a fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, you can visit some of the most iconic locations in New Zealand. The central hub of the films, the city of Wellington, will be your first stop on the tour. The harbor, the city’s waterfront, and the Parliament buildings were used to film the scenes set in Minas Tirith. The riverbanks became the path to the Black Gates of Mordor. The Weta Workshop, where props and costumes of the films were created, is also located in Wellington. Here, you can visit the studios and meet some of the artists who worked on the movie and the actors who now work as voice actors for the characters in the films.
If you’re a fan of the Game of Thrones TV show, you can tour the film locations in Northern Ireland and Croatia. You’ll be able to visit the Dark Hedges, a landscape made of giant, ancient beech trees that became a part of the show’s opening credits. The King’s Road, which leads to the seaside town of Carrickfergus, was also used to film scenes from the show. Carrickfergus Castle, located near the King’s Road, was used as the setting of Winterfell. There are many other filming locations in Northern Ireland, including the Giant’s Causeway, which served as the setting of the Iron Islands. Dubrovnik and Split, Croatia were also popular filming locations for the show.
If you want to get more out of your trip than just visiting the filming locations, you can experience the Warner Bros. Harry Potter tour in London. This tour will take you to all the iconic places in the city that were used as the films’ settings, such as the Leaky Cauldron, the Ministry of Magic, and Gringotts Bank. You’ll also have the chance to walk through the famous Diagon Alley and see the Ollivanders Wand Shop and the iconic London Eye. If you’re a fan of the HBO TV show Westworld, you can visit some of the show’s filming locations in Utah. In particular, you’ll want to see the real-life cowboy town where filming took place and the desert where most of the scenes set in the park were filmed.
It’s essential to plan your trip in advance, as many tours are very popular and sell out quickly. You’ll want to book your tickets as soon as they become available and secure your place on the tour.
