Could Portugal Be Our 2027 Adventure?

There are destinations that impress you from the moment you arrive.

And then there are places that quietly work their way into your heart.

That’s Portugal.

It’s the café where locals converse over coffee instead of rushing to the next appointment. It’s the sound of church bells echoing through cobblestone streets that have been walked for centuries. It’s the view from a hilltop village as the late afternoon sun paints the rooftops in shades of gold.

Portugal doesn’t ask you to hurry.

It invites you to slow down.

I think that’s one of the reasons so many people return home wondering why they didn’t visit sooner.

Our journey would begin in Porto, a city that’s as welcoming as it is beautiful. Colorful buildings tumble down the hillside toward the Douro River, historic trams rumble through narrow streets, and lively cafés spill onto sidewalks where conversations seem to last all afternoon.

We’ll wander through Porto’s historic center, stroll along the Ribeira waterfront, and cruise the Douro River aboard a traditional rabelo boat, seeing the city from the same waterway that helped shape its history. Of course, no visit to Porto would be complete without visiting one of the city’s renowned port wine cellars, where we’ll learn about this world-famous wine and enjoy a tasting paired with lunch.

Leaving Porto behind, we’ll discover another side of Portugal.

The countryside unfolds in rolling vineyards, olive groves, and peaceful villages where life still follows traditions that have endured for generations. Along the way we’ll visit Coimbra, home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, where centuries of scholarship and beautiful architecture have earned UNESCO recognition. Walking through its historic streets feels like stepping into another era.

Our journey continues to Évora, one of Portugal’s best-preserved medieval cities. Surrounded by ancient walls and filled with quiet squares, whitewashed buildings, and fascinating history, it’s a place that encourages you to wander without checking your watch. Our hotel, a beautifully restored former convent dating back to the 15th century, adds another layer to the experience, blending history with modern comfort in a setting that’s uniquely Portuguese.

Then there’s Lisbon.

Few European capitals are as effortlessly charming.

Built across seven hills overlooking the Tagus River, Lisbon is a city of elegant plazas, historic neighborhoods, colorful tiled buildings, and vintage yellow trams climbing impossibly steep streets. Every neighborhood seems to have its own personality, and one of the greatest pleasures is simply exploring them on foot, stopping whenever a bakery tempts you with a warm pastel de nata or a scenic overlook calls for another photograph.

Just outside the city, we’ll visit Sintra, where grand palaces, lush gardens, and hilltop castles create an atmosphere that feels almost storybook. It’s easy to understand why Portuguese royalty once chose this area as their summer retreat. We’ll also spend time in the sophisticated seaside town of Cascais, where fishing boats share the harbor with elegant yachts and the Atlantic breeze reminds you that the sea has always shaped Portugal’s identity.

One of the things I love most about Portugal is that it never feels rushed.

Meals are meant to be enjoyed, not hurried. Conversations linger over another glass of wine. Local markets, neighborhood cafés, and family-run restaurants offer opportunities to experience the country the way the Portuguese do, with an appreciation for good food, good company, and simple pleasures.

October makes this journey even more appealing. The summer crowds have faded, temperatures are comfortably mild for sightseeing, and the countryside still carries the energy of the recent grape harvest. It’s one of those times of year when Portugal feels especially relaxed and authentic.

Like all of my hosted journeys, this would be more than a vacation.

It would be a chance to share wonderful meals, discover remarkable places, and enjoy the experience with a small group of travelers who appreciate culture, history, food, wine, and the joy of exploring at a comfortable pace.

Portugal may not be the first destination people think of when planning a European vacation. But it often becomes one of their favorites.
