Four Countries, One Afternoon: The Day Trip Almost No One Takes

Most people come to Bad Ragaz for the thermal waters. They soak, they dine, they admire the Alps, and they leave, never knowing that in just over two hours, they could have stood in four countries.

I learned this from Gian, my contact at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, during a visit last November. He grew up in this part of Switzerland and knew something most travelers miss.

He’d done the research: nowhere else on Earth lets you cross into four countries this quickly and easily — no border checks, no visas, no waiting in line. The closest comparison he found was where Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in southern Africa. Even there, you’re standing in line with your visa and passport out.

Here, you just drive.

The Route: What Two Hours Actually Gets You

You start in Bad Ragaz, in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen, the same mountain valley that inspired the story of Heidi. Eight minutes over a mountain pass and you’re in Liechtenstein, one of the smallest countries in the world. Most travelers have never been there, even though it’s right next door.

Twenty minutes is all Liechtenstein really needs, and Gian would argue it’s the best twenty minutes of the trip. That’s enough time to visit the royal family’s winery, taste a Pinot Noir or Chardonnay bearing a genuine royal crest, and leave with a bottle that will have everyone talking at your next dinner party.

From there, it’s less than thirty minutes east into Austria, where the scenery changes from dramatic Swiss peaks to rolling green hills, and the menu shifts to Grüner Veltliner and Kaiserschmarrn. 

Then comes the best view of the whole trip: a hillside restaurant above Lake Constance where Switzerland and the Alps are on your left, Austria is straight ahead, and jutting into the lake on a little peninsula is the Bavarian town of Lindau. That’s Germany.

A full loop with stops takes about two hours and twenty minutes. Leave after breakfast, and you’re back before lunch.

A Progressive Dinner Across Borders

During our conversation, Gian and I kicked around a fun idea: a progressive dinner where each course is served in a different country. Swiss wine in Bad Ragaz to start. Liechtenstein for the royal winery and light bites. Austria for a proper sit-down course — Wiener Schnitzel or something slow-roasted. Then Germany for the finale: white sausage and beer in Lindau before the drive back to Switzerland for cheese fondue and a nightcap.

Four countries. Four courses. One awesome afternoon.

Bregenz, Lindau, and the Lake Between Them

The Austrian city of Bregenz sits right on Lake Constance and hosts one of the world’s great outdoor opera festivals every July and August with performances on a floating stage built directly on the water. If you’re there during those months, don’t miss it.

Lindau is the kind of place that surprises people. It looks almost Mediterranean with its narrow lanes, colorful facades, a harbor guarded by a stone lion, and a lighthouse. It’s small and extraordinarily pretty, and it’s close enough to feel like a side trip, which is exactly why many people in the region never go. That’s a pity.

The Passport Stamp Problem 

Because of the Schengen Agreement, there are no border checkpoints between these four countries. That means no passport stamps. You could visit four countries in one afternoon and have zero proof.

Gian is in conversation with local authorities about sourcing souvenir stamps for guests: Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, all with the same date, on the same page of your passport. No other itinerary in the world can do that.

Official border stamps are being phased out in favor of digital systems, so this window won’t stay open long.

The Best Time to Go

Gian recommends June. The Alps are an intense green that’s hard to photograph. The bright blue sky, gorgeous valleys, and sparkling lake must be seen in person.

October is a close second. The Lake Constance area turns golden and quiet, the summer crowds are gone, and it feels like the whole place belongs to you.

Either season works. What matters is actually making the trip, because this is one of those rare adventures that’s even better than it sounds.
