St. Lucia surprised me, not because of the usual sightseeing, but because each side of the island feels and works so differently. I spent my recent short visit in the southwest, where the scenery, pace, and resort experiences are intentional. The north, with Castries and Gros Islet, has a completely different vibe, and this contrast is important when deciding where to stay.
Unlike places like Cancun or Punta Cana, St. Lucia doesn’t have an overwhelming number of all-inclusive resorts. Instead, you’ll find a mix of classic all-inclusives, boutique hotels, and European-plan properties. This gives travelers options without making the island feel the same everywhere.
Soufrière is quieter and more remote. The roads get narrower, life moves slower, and you can almost always see the Pitons. The north is easier to get around and more social, with better roads, more places to eat, and a more polished resort feel. Neither side is better; they just suit different types of travelers.
The main international airport,Hewanorra International (UVF), is in the south. If you’re staying near Castries or Gros Islet, the drive can take 90 minutes to two hours on winding roads. After a long travel day, that can feel like a lot. If your budget allows, I highly recommend a helicopter transfer. It saves time, helps you avoid a tiring drive (especially if you get motion sickness), and gives you a scenic first look at the island.
I stayed at or toured each of the resorts below, so these impressions are based on first-hand experience.

This is where I stayed. Ladera is adults-only and perfect for travelers who want to feel close to nature. The open-air suites, no TVs, and constant Piton views make it a great choice for couples who value privacy, beautiful scenery, and a unique atmosphere. Highlights include a top-notch spa, hiking trails on the property, and an art studio with paint-and-sip classes.

Jade Mountain builds on the same idea but takes it even further. The huge suites have private infinity pools and offer total seclusion, making it a true once-in-a-lifetime place to stay. It’s made almost entirely for couples who want privacy and quiet, and it doesn’t try to be anything else.

Anse Chastanet is for travelers who care more about substance than fancy details. Divers, hikers, and people who visit the Caribbean often and don’t need marble lobbies to feel comfortable usually love it. It’s relaxed, artistic, closely tied to its surroundings, and right on the beach.

Sugar Beach is a good middle ground. It’s refined but not stuffy, and it works well for both couples and families of all ages. Guests enjoy a beautiful white-sand beach with reserved loungers, great dining, and lots of activities, from chocolate-making classes to a racquet club with tennis, pickleball, and padel, all set between Soufrière’s dramatic Pitons.

Because I only stayed for three nights, I didn’t get to visit the north this time. What follows is based on my research and lots of feedback from clients.
Castries, Gros Islet, and Rodney Bay offer classic Caribbean luxury, with bigger resorts, better roads, more dining choices, and nightlife. This area is best for travelers who want flexibility, a social atmosphere, and convenience instead of seclusion. I don’t have any royalty-free photos of these resorts, so I’ll hyperlink their websites so you can see them for yourself.
Cap Maison is a family-owned boutique resort above Smugglers Cove. It offers privacy but is still close to Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island. The villa-style suites, many with rooftop pools, superb food and wine, and very personalized service make it perfect for couples and travelers who want intimate, non-all-inclusive luxury.
BodyHoliday is a high-end, all-inclusive wellness resort focused on movement, health, and balance. Daily spa treatments are included on full days, and there’s a packed schedule of fitness and sports. It’s best for couples, solo travelers, and friends who want a wellness-focused trip with structure but not a party scene.
St. Lucia may not have many all-inclusive resorts, but the newest one is worth noting. Opened in June of 2025 on a private part of Choc Bay, Secrets St. Lucia is adults-only and offers luxury all-inclusive stays with modern rooms, several dining options, and a focus on the beach and pool.

In Soufrière, the resort is the main attraction. In Castries, the resort is just one part of a bigger trip.

St. Lucia isn’t just one kind of trip; it changes depending on where you stay. Choose Soufrière for privacy, dramatic scenery, and a slower pace and Castries for social energy, dining variety, and a more outward-facing resort experience.
Or split your stay and enjoy the best of both.
This is the kind of place where choosing the right side of the island makes all the difference, and even if you’re short on time, it is well worth the effort to get there.
