I went to Switzerland last month expecting beauty. What I didn’t expect was a new perspective.
Between my first perfectly timed train and morning coffee overlooking the Alps, Switzerland quietly reset my views on travel, time, and the meaning of a ‘good day.’ Nothing here feels rushed or loud.
For active travelers, Switzerland feels purpose-built. Trails are impeccably marked, cable cars whisk you to panoramic summits, and ski runs end in storybook villages. Movement is intentional and energizing, leaving you restored, not exhausted.

I landed in Geneva and within minutes was on a train, First Class Swiss Pass in hand, watching Lake Geneva slide into view. That moment set the tone for the entire trip. In Switzerland, the train isn’t just transportation. It’s part of the experience. Wide windows, smooth rides, scenery that makes you forget to check your phone.

In Lausanne, I stayed at the Beau-Rivage Palace. It’s a grand lakeside hotel that somehow manages to feel elegant without being stiff—calm service, beautiful rooms, and views that invite you to slow down. But Lausanne itself surprised me: steep cobbled streets, hidden viewpoints, and a small Christmas market create a youthful energy that balances history with modern life. Later, just outside the city in the Lavaux Wine Region, we found 800-year-old vineyards hugging Lake Geneva. With the Alps in the distance, it’s clear why these places endure.

Next was Montreux, just as the Christmas Market lit up. Reflections danced on the lake, the air was spiced with mulled wine, and Chillon Castle rose from the water. By chance, it was the anniversary of Freddie Mercury’s death; flowers and handwritten notes gathered at his statue. Switzerland turns quiet moments into lasting memories.

Next, we boarded the GoldenPass train to Interlaken. Honestly, this ride alone could justify the trip. Alpine villages, forests, frozen lakes, and snow-covered peaks unfolded outside our windows. Interlaken was our base for two nights at the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa, a place where time seems to slow the moment you walk in. World-class spa, impeccable service, and a sense that rest is taken seriously here.
One of the most anticipated days was our journey to Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe, at over 11,000 feet. We climbed higher by train and gondola until the world turned white. It snowed hard. We were fully in the clouds. And honestly, that made it even better in a weird kind of way. The VIP gondola, Ice Palace, private bar, and fondue lunch transformed it from a viewpoint into a full alpine experience. Not rushed. Not crowded. Exactly how it should be done.

After unforgettable days in the Bernese Oberland, we found ourselves navigating a full blizzard in Andermatt, bound for the Chedi Andermatt. It feels rugged, authentic, and deeply Swiss. Andermatt isn’t flashy like St. Moritz or buzzy like Zermatt. That’s exactly the point. It attracts travelers who value privacy, authenticity, and space to breathe. People who appreciate beauty but don’t need it announced.

Our journey continued with a stop in Bad Ragaz, where we checked into the Grand Hotel Bad Ragaz, another spa icon. Thanksgiving there meant fondue and classic Swiss dishes, which somehow felt exactly right. A gondola ride up Mount Pizol rewarded us with sweeping 360-degree Alpine views.
One afternoon, our hosts made a playful suggestion: Four Meals, Four Countries, Four Hours. Breakfast in Switzerland, lunch in Liechtenstein, coffee in Austria, dinner in Germany—though squeezing it all into four hours felt ambitious. Short scenic drives, mountain backdrops, and meals where the journey mattered as much as the food. I’ll have to try it next time!
Before leaving, we made a quick ten-minute detour to Liechtenstein—it would have been a shame to be so close and not check it off my country list.

Our final stop was Gonten, home to the new Appenzeller Huus Quell. Warm, modern, and rooted in tradition, it felt like the perfect finale. We took a cable car to Kronberg for sweeping views, watching families sledding and brave souls paragliding, capped by a yodeling lesson—joyful, awkward, and unforgettable.
Switzerland taught me this isn’t a one-time destination. It’s a place you return to, again and again. Maybe in summer, when the mountains turn green, and the wildflowers are in bloom. Maybe for the Glacier Express or Bernina Express next time.
If you’ve been waiting for a sign to book that trip, this is it. Switzerland isn’t just somewhere you visit. It’s somewhere you feel long after you’ve come home.
Our bespoke itineraries are uniquely designed to completely immerse you in your destination, with delightfully unexpected surprises along the way.
We have a special passion for all things culinary—and we would love to introduce you to your destination’s distinct (and delicious!) food and wine traditions through one-of-a-kind culinary experiences.
