As a luxury travel advisor with a deep passion for Africa, I recently had the privilege of exploring Kenya’s most exquisite lodges and wildlife sanctuaries. This journey didn’t just reinforce my love for this land—it reminded me why every traveler deserves to experience the heart-stopping beauty, vibrant cultures, and soul-stirring encounters that only Kenya can offer.
Hemingways Nairobi: Where Your Adventure Begins in Style
Your Kenyan journey starts in the suburb of Karen, at the elegant Hemingways Nairobi. This boutique hotel is a bastion of tranquility, where spacious suites overlook manicured gardens and the distant Ngong Hills.
During my stay, I visited the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where I witnessed the touching rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned elephants. Each young elephant has a story, and seeing them up close—playful, curious, and so well cared for—was a moving reminder of Kenya’s commitment to conservation. We even adopted a baby elephant and baby rhino orphan, doing our part to help the cause.
At the Giraffe Centre, I hand-fed endangered Rothschild’s giraffes, their gentle eyes and long lashes making every moment unforgettable. These are not just excursions—they are opportunities to connect with Kenya’s wildlife and the passionate people protecting them.
Elewana Tortilis Camp, Amboseli: Majestic Elephant Encounters
From Nairobi, I journeyed south to Amboseli National Park, where the iconic silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro rises above sweeping savannahs. Elewana Tortilis Camp is nestled in a private conservancy, offering eco-chic tents with uninterrupted views of the mountain and the park’s legendary elephants.
Amboseli is famed for its “super tuskers”—majestic elephants with enormous ivory tusks. On our very first morning, we savored a gourmet bush breakfast as Kilimanjaro emerged from the clouds, its snow-capped peak glowing in the early light. Even the “loo with a view” at our bush breakfast offered a panorama of endless plains dotted with wildlife.
Game drives here are a photographer’s dream, especially during the dry months (June to October) when herds gather at the marshes. We spotted most of the Big Five, including lions, hippos, Cape Buffalo, and elephants (only the elusive leopard escaped our cameras’ lenses), and visited a Maasai village where we were welcomed with spirited songs and traditional dances.
The Maasai’s warmth, pride, and artistry—reflected in their beadwork and storytelling—left a lasting impression.
As night fell, I captured the Milky Way arching above Kilimanjaro after our Sundowner—a reminder that in Kenya, even the stars seem to celebrate our journey.
Elewana Lewa Safari Camp: A Conservation Success Story
Our Lewa safari camp, located within the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, took me by surprise in the best way. I witnessed the remarkable success of various conservation initiatives. From the moment we arrived, it felt like stepping into a different rhythm quiet, wild, and completely unspoiled, and with a stunning view of Mt. Kenya.
Game drives here aren’t rushed; with so few vehicles allowed at sightings, every moment feels personal. We saw rhinos, Grevy’s zebra, elephants, lions, and even the elusive Oryx. But what really stood out was the heart behind it all Lewa’s decades-long conservation work is woven into every part of the experience. If you want a safari that truly means something, this is the place. The Conservancy serves as a sanctuary for endangered species such as black rhinos and Grevy’s zebras. We were fortunate to observe “Sonia,” the famous black rhino known for having a rear horn longer than her front horn.
We also stumbled upon a pride of lions who were enjoying their morning breakfast (an unfortunate zebra), while jackals and hyenas waited their turn for the scraps.
The camp’s intimate setting and knowledgeable guides offered deep insights into the region’s ecology. It also has a stunning view of Mt. Kenya. The best time to visit is during the dry months of July to September and December to February, when wildlife is more easily spotted. During our visit at the end of the rainy season, we had to put in extra effort to spot the animals.
Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp: Innovation in the Wild
Situated on the edge of a plateau, Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp offers stunning panoramic views of the Laikipia plains. Waking up here feels unreal like you’re floating above it all. Every corner of the camp, from the tents to the lounge, opens up to that jaw-dropping panorama. It’s peaceful, luxurious, and deeply connected to the land. If you’re looking for a safari stay that’s both breathtaking and unforgettable, Loisaba is it. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by a herd of elephants at the watering hole!
Loisaba Conservancy is renowned for its innovative conservation efforts and is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including elephants, big cats, and the rare wild dog. The camp features luxurious tents, and the option to sleep under the stars on a “Star Bed” made our stay truly unforgettable. The dry seasons from July to September and December to February are ideal for wildlife viewing, similar to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
Our guide, Raphael, is from the Samburu tribe in northern Kenya, while the Maasai people reside in the south. He was an engaging character, and we learned a great deal about tracking wildlife from him.
Elewana Sand River Masai Mara: The Greatest Show on Earth
No safari is complete without the Masai Mara, and Elewana Sand River Camp places you at the heart of this legendary reserve. Set on the banks of the Sand River, the camp’s vintage-style tents evoke the romance of classic safaris, while modern comforts and impeccable service ensure a seamless stay.
From July to September, the Mara becomes the stage for the Great Migration—when millions of wildebeest and zebras thunder across the plains and brave dramatic river crossings. From the camp, you’re perfectly positioned to witness this spectacle, and a hot air balloon ride at dawn offers a breathtaking perspective as herds move beneath you and lions prowl in the golden light.
The Mara’s abundance of wildlife and high density of predators means every game drive is filled with anticipation and wonder.
