Have you ever experienced an impactful journey that stays with you forever? I recently returned from such an adventure in Peru, a place filled with vibrant history, culture, and stunning scenery. While Lima was the ideal starting point (you can read more about my Lima escapades here), it was the destinations that followed that truly transformed this trip into something unforgettable.
After a short flight from Lima to Cusco—the historic heart of the Inca Empire—we headed straight to the Sacred Valley. This strategic move helped us avoid the intense altitude sickness newcomers often experience in Cusco. The Sacred Valley, nestled at a lower altitude, offers the perfect environment to ease into Peru’s lofty heights. For even better acclimatization, consider spending the night before your Machu Picchu visit in Aguascalientes, which sits at a lower altitude and allows for an early start to the Citadel.
The Sacred Valley is filled with Inca culture and history. Our first stop was Ollantaytambo, a living museum where ancient Inca walls and waterways remain in use. It’s a journey back in time. We recommend having some mornings or afternoons at leisure in each destination, either for rest, to acclimatize to the altitude, or to visit the city on your own.
A unique highlight for adventure-seekers is the Sky Lodge Adventure Suites, a transparent luxury capsule hanging from a mountain in the Andean range. Accessible via a 400-meter climb or an adventurous hike, it offers breathtaking views and a high-adrenaline experience. Packages include breakfast and a gourmet dinner with wine, making it a truly extraordinary escape.
No Peruvian adventure is complete without visiting Machu Picchu. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, Machu Picchu is a place that truly lives up to its hype. From Ollantaytambo, we caught a scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes before transitioning to the bus that would take us to Machu Picchu. The site’s sophisticated dry-stone construction is not just awe-inspiring, but it also leaves you with a sense of wonder at the ingenuity of the ancient Incas.
• Circuit 2 is best for photographers, and Circuit 3 is for those with mobility issues.
• Bring two Peruvian soles (coins) for bathroom access outside the park; once you leave, you cannot re-enter, so go before your timed entry.
• You can hire a Sherpa for a multi-day hike or take the train to km 104 to hike part of the Inca trail.
• Best train views are on the river side; the ride lasts approximately 1h30m.
• Bring a small poncho in case of rain. Machu Picchu is the gateway to the Amazon jungle, and the weather can change quickly.
Local markets in Peru are a treasure trove of beautiful textiles from the Sacred Valley to Cusco. Artisans display their skill in every hand-woven Alpaca sweater, scarf, and poncho. These items are not just souvenirs; they are pieces of Peruvian culture you can take home, making your shopping experience a unique and exciting part of your journey.
No trip to Peru is complete without experiencing the local cuisine. From hearty dishes like Lomo Saltado (stir-fried beef with vegetables) and Aji de Gallina (chicken in spicy, nutty sauce) to the more adventurous Cuy (roasted guinea pig), every meal was a delightful exploration of the region’s culinary traditions. Chicha Morada, a refreshing drink made from purple corn, quickly became a favorite, leaving us hungry for more of Peru’s unique flavors.
Returning to Cusco, we were ready to explore its elevation and rich mix of Inca and Spanish colonial architecture. Key sites include Qorikancha (the Sun Temple) and Saqsaywaman Fortress, offering a deep dive into the city’s storied past.
Don’t wait until Cusco for your shopping. You can find the best handicrafts along the way, and they aren’t necessarily cheaper in Cusco. Plus, finding a taxi near the markets can be tricky if you don’t speak Spanish.
This life-changing journey through Peru, from the colonial beauty of Lima to the mystical heights of Machu Picchu and the cultural heart of Cusco, was an experience I will cherish forever.
