Autumn is a magical time bringing cooler temperatures, bustling cider mills, a sprinkle of pumpkin spice in everything, and leaves transforming into vivid hues of yellow, orange, and red. For many, this season is synonymous with “leaf peeping”—a delightful journey to witness nature’s fiery transformation.
Although New England typically comes to mind for fall foliage, many other places across the country boast breathtaking autumn colors. To ensure your timing is impeccable, I wanted to share these tips to synchronize your Fall getaway, whether you’re witnessing the maples turn red in Tennessee or the aspens display a golden glow in Colorado.
If you’re planning a fall drive through some of the country’s most scenic regions this season, consider heading to one of my top picks for an unforgettable autumn road trip:
Often hailed as “America’s Favorite Drive,” the Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469-mile tapestry of winding roads, stretching from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. Thanks to its diverse tree species, this iconic route offers a kaleidoscope of fall colors. The best time to visit? Generally, from mid-to-late October. Prepare to be mesmerized by the Smokies’ vibrant seasonal display.
The Finger Lakes region near Ithaca in upstate New York is a beautiful place to visit in the fall. You can stay at the historic Inns of Aurora, sample local wines, and hike scenic trails surrounded by autumn foliage. The peak color season usually occurs in the last two weeks of September, but the fall festivities continue into October, providing a vibrant backdrop for your leaf-peeping adventure.
A hidden gem for fall enthusiasts, Multnomah Falls in Oregon offers an awe-inspiring combo of spectacular foliage and cascading waterfalls. Though I hail from Washington, this area holds a special place in my heart. The Columbia River Gorge, home to countless waterfalls, presents exquisite autumn landscapes ideal for a guided boat tour or vigorous hike. Peak foliage ranges from late September to mid-October—don’t miss it!
Few destinations top the Great Lakes for dazzling foliage. Begin your journey at the southern edge of Lake Huron, admire tall ship schooners, then head north along the lake, pausing for a hike at Thunder Bay River State Forest. Hop on a ferry from Mackinaw City to Mackinac Island and explore this no-car National Historic Landmark by bike, horse, or buggy. Wind down your trip in Traverse City, savoring the region’s delectable wineries. From late September to mid-October, explore the enchanting “Tree Tunnel” highway (US-41) in Copper Harbor—simply sublime!
While Colorado is often associated with evergreens, Aspen is famed for its shimmery golden trees that reflect its namesake. Although the fall foliage season here is relatively short, the trip is unquestionably worth it. Discover the breathtaking Maroon Bells (please Google it – trust me, you’ll love it!), a must-visit for spectacular mustard golds, most expressive in late September. The best experience for them is hiking one of the area’s trails or taking a mountain drive through the Maroon Bells peaks (Google it, you’ll thank me later).
What list of fall destinations would be complete without the crown jewel of Vermont? Wander through the picturesque towns of Stowe and Woodstock, where you’ll find covered bridges draped in golden foliage, or take a scenic drive along Route 100, known as Vermont’s main street. Marvel at peak colors, usually found from late September to early October. Whether you choose a leisurely hike to admire the panoramic views from Mount Mansfield or indulge in local maple treats, Vermont’s autumnal charm will leave you spellbound.
