The holidays are a time for togetherness, gratitude, and consuming copious amounts of comfort food. But getting to your Thanksgiving destination can be a royal pain. Traffic snarls, packed airports, delayed flights—trying to travel over the holidays can quickly turn from Holly Jolly to Bah Humbug!
As your trusted travel agent, I’m here to sleigh—er, slay—the beast known as holiday travel stress. Follow my 5 tips below to ensure your Thanksgiving voyage is smooth sailing:
Avoid the travel rush by booking flights, renting cars, and reserving hotel rooms as far in advance as possible. Set calendar alerts so you remember important reservations and deadlines. Arrive early at the airport, too—at least two hours ahead for domestic U.S. flights. Better three hours early than stuck in a long security line!
Why schlep bulky bags? Lighten your load and ship your luggage to your destination via FedEx or UPS. Some airlines even offer luggage shipping services. You’ll breeze through the airport unencumbered while your bags wait patiently at Grandma’s house.
Delays happen, so come prepared. Download movies, ebooks, playlists, and podcasts on your phone or tablet before you leave. Bring noise-canceling headphones, cozy socks, neck pillows—anything to improve how you pass the time. Dress in comfy layers for chilly planes and terminals. A relaxed, entertained traveler is less stressed!
Ditch the rental car and use public transportation or rideshares to get around. You’ll avoid traffic jams and parking hassles. Many airports have direct public transit connections. Most cities offer solid bus, train, and subway systems, too. Added bonus: no designated driver duties!
Despite best-laid plans, travel glitches happen. Flights get canceled, bags get lost, and connections are missed. Don’t let the little things ruin your holiday. Expect delays and snafus, and be ready to problem-solve on the fly. Bring snacks, have phone chargers handy, and use apps to rebook if needed. Remind yourself the holidays are about family, not perfect logistics. An open mindset prevents stress from spiraling out of control.
The holidays can absolutely be the most stressful time to travel. But with some savvy preparation and flexibility, you can minimize headaches. Safe travels, and Happy Thanksgiving!
