If you’re looking for a destination rich in history, culture, and beauty, look no further than Venice, Italy. As a travel advisor, I cannot recommend this city enough to my clients seeking a truly unforgettable experience. In fact, I’m in Venice as I’m writing this, so I am lucky enough to experience most of what I’m about to tell you!
Venice is a city that has captured the hearts of travelers for centuries, and it’s not hard to see why. With its winding canals, ornate bridges, and charming piazzas, this city is truly a feast for the senses. From the moment you step onto one of the city’s iconic water taxis, you’ll be transported to a world of romance and wonder.
One of the first things I recommend my clients do when they arrive in Venice is to stroll through the famous St. Mark’s Square, the heart of the city, and the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere and watch the world go by. From here, you can explore the narrow streets and alleyways of the city, stopping along the way to admire the beautiful architecture and browse the local shops.
Of course, a trip to Venice would only be complete with a ride on a gondola, one of the city’s most iconic experiences and a great way to see the city from a different perspective. Glide along the canals and take in the stunning views of the city’s many palaces and historic buildings.
For history buffs, I always recommend visiting the Doge’s Palace, which was once the seat of power in Venice. This magnificent building is a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture and is home to an impressive collection of art and artifacts. The palace is also connected to the famous Bridge of Sighs, which is said to have received its name from the sighs of prisoners led across it to their cells.
Another must-visit attraction in Venice is the Rialto Bridge, one of the city’s oldest and most beautiful bridges and the perfect spot for taking in stunning views of the Grand Canal. The bridge is also home to a bustling market where you can sample some of the city’s famous seafood and pick up souvenirs to take home.
Of course, the highlight of any trip to Venice involves indulging in some of the city’s world-renowned cuisine. This city is a food lover’s paradise, from fresh seafood to traditional Venetian dishes. Be sure to try local delicacies, such as sarde in saor (marinated sardines) and fegato alla veneziana (Venetian-style liver) on a Cicchetti tour.
Here are some other “can’t miss” things to do in Venice:
A short boat ride from Venice, Murano Island is famous for its glass-making traditions. Here, you can visit glass factories and workshops to see artisans creating intricate pieces of art using ancient techniques.
Another nearby island, Burano is known for its brightly colored houses and picturesque canals. This is a great place to explore on foot, taking in the charming sights and stopping for a meal at one of the island’s many seafood restaurants. It kind of reminds me of Bo Kaap in Cape Town, South Africa!
The Venetian mask tradition dates back centuries and is still a beloved part of the city’s culture. Visit one of the many mask shops in Venice to see a variety of masks, from simple and elegant to ornate and whimsical..
As you can see, Venice is a city that truly has something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for romance, history, or just a chance to unwind and soak up the beauty of one of the world’s most unique destinations, this city will surely leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. As a travel advisor, I cannot recommend this city enough to my clients. So what are you waiting for? Book your trip to Venice today and experience the magic for yourself!
