As the weather turns colder and the snow starts to fall, many people in northern states dream of a warmer climate, swaying palm trees and poolside cocktails with little umbrellas. Looking for ideas on where you can travel now, where you can put your toes in the sand for a few days? One of my favorite warm-weather destinations is relatively easy to get to from just about anywhere on Mainland U.S., you don’t have to speak fluent Spanish to enjoy your visit, and they even take U.S. dollars most everywhere. I’m talking about Los Cabos, Mexico!
Located at the southernmost point of the Baja California Peninsula, this stunning resort town combines the best of Mexican culture with remarkable seaside escapes. Just a quick flight from the U.S. will land you in a tropical paradise surrounded by brilliant blue waters. From the beaches to the desert, Los Cabos seems to have it all. Below I’ve outlined the five things you absolutely must check-out during your trip to Los Cabos!
At the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula is the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas or El Arco. The rock formation provides the most brilliant natural training venue for cliff diving. Playa De Amor (more affectionately known as Lovers’ Beach) is the north-facing beach on Land’s End. The beach is flanked on both sides by the granite rocks from El Arco. Playa Del Amor is a cove that features calm waters, but a walk to the other side of the beach will bring you to the roaring surf of the Pacific Ocean. It is a favorite of snorkelers and scuba divers alike.
Home to one of only three coral reefs on the whole West coast of North America, Cabo Pulmo National Park is one of Baja California’s most precious protected marine areas. Its coral reef is considered to be the oldest in the American Pacific at almost 20,000 years old.
The most historical landmark in all of Los Cabos is the Colonial-style parish church in San José. It was initially built near the beach and later moved further inland. In 1735, five years after the mission was founded, there was a revolt among the local Pericú culture, and the missionary, Nicolás Tamaral, ended up being sacrificed. Today you can still visit the mission’s church and see the tiled mural above the door depicting the events.
Explore the vibrant culture of Los Cabos with a trip to the art district. Gallery openings, artists in attendance sessions, and live performances, are just a few of the things you can expect when you walk down the street if you happen to be there on a Thursday night. There are also plenty of hip wine bars and delicious farm-to-table restaurants lining the lively streets for a fun evening out on the town!
The bustling marina is a hub for adventure seekers, foodies, and shoppers visiting Los Cabos. You can leave on whale-watching tours (December 15-April), kayaking excursions, and luxury boat trips from the marina. Oceanfront eateries serving ceviche and tacos sit beside lively bars on a spacious boardwalk. The high-end boutiques and casual stores are a great place to go to beat the heat!
