You’ve heard the old quote…” There is safety in numbers”. Well, there is also a ton of fun in numbers, especially when you travel with like-minded and fun-seeking friends, family members, and people who share common interests. Unless you are planning a honeymoon or romantic getaway for two, you might want to consider asking a few extra people to go with you on your next getaway! Here are a few reasons why it can unquestionably improve your vacation:
1. When a work-related group, such as an Accounting firm, gets away from the stresses of the office at the end of tax season, it allows them to cut loose and make awesome memories together. That can lead to a more harmonious workplace, and even improve the long-term employee retention numbers in the firm. I’ll give you an example: the owner of the firm who does my business taxes is planning a post-tax-season getaway with her employees as a reward for their hard work. She is one of the kindest and most generous people that I have ever met – and it shows in the morale of her employees. The company that plays together…stays together!
2. Extended families often live miles apart and usually have such incredibly busy schedules that it is often impossible to get together and enjoy each other’s company. It has become more and more common for a member of the family – usually a grandparent – to spearhead (and, in some cases, pay for) a multi-generational family group to get away together. Often, they would prefer to enjoy the vacation and create memorable experiences with all of their children now than to leave them the money later. A cruise is also a popular extended-family getaway because there are so many onboard activities that appeal to all different age groups. It’s a very relaxed and fun atmosphere that allows all ages to have fun and spend time with each other. A few years ago, my parents rented a beach house in Oregon, and my whole family, including siblings, kids, nieces, and nephews had a blast during our week in Seaside!
3. Affinity groups – Do you belong to an alumni association, fraternal organization, or local philanthropic group? Are you part of a pickleball, golf, book, or wine club? If so, you already know how gratifying it is to spend time with others who share your interests. You already have so much in common; why not share your love of travel with them, too? Not only will you get to plan a dream trip with your friends and companions, but you’ll also enjoy a few compelling incentives along the way — often, if you gather a group of 10 travelers, the 11th travels FREE! You can also keep earning cash rewards for each additional traveler; with enough travelers, you can even charter a luxury ship-I can show you how!
4. A friends getaway is also becoming more popular. Especially friends who have kids the same ages! How fun would it be for the kids to play together at the beach or pool while the adults enjoy an adult beverage and a little R&R. You can also bribe the older kids to take turns babysitting the younger kids while the grownups go out for a rare adults-only dinner. There are built-in playmates for both the youngsters and the adults alike! When one of my clients books a spring break getaway or summer vacation, I usually ask them, “are there any friends or family members that you think might enjoy joining you on this trip?” Most of the time, they end up sharing the info and thanking me for thinking of the idea – hey, that’s what I do!
You have to admit, not only is traveling in a group safer, but it’s also way more fun to explore new destinations, cultures, and cuisines with other people. It’s especially helpful as we get older, and friends begin to move away or grow apart. Nothing enhances a long-distance friendship like navigating a new country together, language barrier and all. In addition to improving your relationship, having your BFFs alongside you makes the trip that much more enjoyable, too (according to a recent Travel & Leisure article, science proves a mini-trip with friends is advantageous for your health). You can split the cost, collaborate on itinerary ideas, and have someone to complain to if your flight is delayed.
