How Small Upgrades Can Enhance Your Travel Experience

It can be difficult to stick to a budget when booking a vacation, but did you know that there are inexpensive upgrades that can significantly improve the enjoyment of your trip?

1. Premium Economy flight upgrades

If Business or First-Class still a little bit out of your financial comfort zone, why not upgrade to Premium Economy? The cost can be minimal, and those few inches of extra room, and sometimes added amenities, can make a difference between a comfortable journey and a cramped nightmare.

2. Airport Lounges

If you have a long layover along your travel route, consider purchasing a day-pass for your airline’s Airport Club Lounge. It can be a more comfortable way to spend a few hours, and many include complimentary Wi-fi, snacks, beverages (sometimes alcoholic as well), and comfortable seats in a quieter location. Some Frequent flier programs or Credit Card companies offer you discounts or perks for admission, so it’s a good idea to check in advance!

3. Private airport transfers

There is nothing more comforting than to pass through customs after a long overnight flight to Europe and see your driver standing there with a sign bearing your last name…and a smile! Your driver can escort you to a comfortable, spotless sedan and safely transport you to your accommodations with a cold refreshment in the time it takes to wait in the taxi line. In the Caribbean & Mexico, private transfers can make the difference between a 30-minute direct transport to your resort and a two-hour trip that stops at 4 other hotels along the way. Why not indulge a little and start your vacation off right?

4. Private sightseeing excursions

Have you ever arrived at a popular site only to see a mile-long line of folks waiting to purchase tickets? Or a couple dozen “sheep” being led around by a tour guide holding up a sign? If that looks like something you’d dread, consider upgrading to a private tour guide. The cost can be more reasonable than you think, and the value you receive can be immense! Travel insurance can be a lifesaver! Many travelers will swear that they are going on your vacation NO MATTER WHAT. But, one can’t predict weather, illness, injury, cancellations, or any other nasty surprises that can come up when life happens (pandemic, anyone?). It should be included in the cost of every vacation.

6. Upgrade Your View

You may not hang out in your room at a resort, or in your cabin on a cruise ship, but a common complaint travelers have is the view. It can pay to investigate the price difference to upgrade your view. It’s a small price to pay when you can wake up and enjoy your morning coffee on a terrace overlooking the ocean view instead of the parking lot! 7. Pre-cruise extension

When embarkation day rolls around, cruise ships usually start boarding around noon. They’ll typically require that you be on board at least 2 hours before the ship departs, which leaves a minuscule window to arrive, check in, and arrive safely in your cabin. Arriving at the port city the night before departure will eliminate the stress of the possibilities of delayed or canceled flights or major traffic jams on the way to port. Most cruises leave from alluring cities…why not arrive a day or two early and see what they have to offer?
